Learning

Dear friends,

Thank you for all the prayers and support that you have shown my family and me over these past few months. Your kindness, compassion, and generosity go beyond what any of us could imagine. You truly understand what church means and know how to live the Gospel of love as Christ taught. A special word from my mother Kathy, “thank you and I look forward to thanking you each in person when I am released for extended travel by my many doctors and therapists.”

Do you like to learn new things? When Jesus began his public ministry, he was teaching. Some new things and some refinement of old things, but he was teaching us. Jesus taught us a new way to live. He gave knowledge and shared wisdom. In Proverbs, we are told not to forsake wisdom, and then she will protect you. Love Lady Wisdom and she will watch over you.

Wisdom is sacred. I always think back on the time I asked the congregation who they viewed as being wise. One reply was “my mother,” and another was “Jesus.” I am always interested in knowing the answer to this question. Who do you find as wise?

I remember an aged member of our congregation telling me that every time she reads the Bible she always finds something new to learn. This, coming from someone that has read the Bible cover to cover more times than anyone I know! I found a lot of wisdom in this woman, Dorothy Davis. I can imagine her waving me off if I were to tell her I find her to be wise...but many times a wise person does not even realize they are considered wise.

Obviously, for Dorothy, finding something new to learn was important.

What is something new you would like to learn this year?

Information about the hymns we sing? What does the word liturgical actually mean? Why do we say the Creeds or Lord’s Prayer? Would you like to learn about a topic in the Bible...perhaps about women or prophets? How about learning something about this Luther guy?

Learning something new does not have to be a deep academic venture. When presented in a laid back conversational method I believe that we all can learn with and from each other.

If you have not already received a survey, one will be coming or available on Sunday. We are attempting to broaden the minds of our parish by offering opportunities to learn something new. If enough folks are interested, we can begin a new Adult Forum/Study group to focus on the many different topics out there.
