Give Thanks

2 Corinthians 4:15:

“Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.”

The theme for this year’s Commitment Sunday is “give thanks.” As we approach Thanksgiving it is fitting to talk about what it is we give thanks for. We give thanks for family and community. We give thanks for the church. We give thanks for one another. Our Commitment Sunday, November 24, will be a celebration of Thanksgiving...where we will give thanks.

What do you give thanks for?

Can the church give thanks for abundance? I think so.

We have a cornucopia on the altar to help us get in the Autumn/Thanksgiving mood. Wikipedia tells us “in classical antiquity, the cornucopia, also called the horn of plenty, was a symbol of abundance and nourishment, commonly a large horn-shaped container overflowing with produce, flowers or nuts.” The overflowing of the abundance from the cornucopia on the altar is a reminder of the overflowing of abundant grace in Christ that we celebrate at the table. It shows that the abundance we have overflows - and is enough. As we gear up for this Commitment Sunday, as we begin to think about what it is we are thankful for, I hope that we can look at the abundance in our own lives.
