To Be or Not to Be

“To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?”

Perhaps one (of many) well known Shakespeare quotes - and truly unforgettable when you hear a brilliant actor reciting this monologue from Hamlet (I’m a fan of David Tennant’s performance).

But have you ever heard a quote from Shakespeare that you could have sworn came right out of the Bible or vice-versa? Even the most biblically literate person may pause a moment to decide if what they read was from Shakespeare or the Bible.

So I thought it might be fun to play Shakespeare or the Bible? It’s simple - decide if the following quote is from Mr. William Shakespeare or from the Bible...no cheating! Answers will be revealed next week!

“Get thee to a nunnery”

“Tell truth and shame the devil.”

“The love of money is the root of all evil.”

“Give up the ghost.”

“How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride! How much more pleasing is your love than wine, and the fragrance of your perfume more than any spice!”

“Cast thy bread upon the water.”

“To make a virtue of necessity.”

“This above all: to thine own self be true.”

“I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.”

“Awake, north wind, and come, south wind! Blow on my garden, that its fragrance may spread everywhere. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choice fruits.”

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Jason

Lutheran Church Wilmington

As a Reconciling in Christ congregation of the ELCA, we believe that the gospel is God's gift to all people, shared unconditionally and without regard to race, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, socio-economic or family status, age, physical or mental abilities, outward appearance, or religious affiliation. We seek racial equality and justice. In this way, we live into the truth written in Ephesians (2:14)—that Christ breaks down the dividing walls between us and makes us one.
