This service is held the second Sunday month at 2 pm, and is designed for people with developmental disability and their families.
It is a service of prayer, scripture reading, and song to which all are invited. One of the central parts of our worship is the birthday time. We ask at each worship whose birthday is that month. We then pray for and sing “Happy Birthday to You!” Why sing a secular song in divine worship? Because we affirm that God is glad that each individual is born and is part of the community. Saint Stephen’s is committed to the idea of the imago Dei, that we are all created in the image of God, and that our disabilities, while real and often tragic, are not the ultimate definition of who we are. We are, all of us, children of God and therefore we are loved.
Porters are available to assist you beginning around 1:30 at the Broom Street entrance to Saint Stephen's. Our porters take their name from the ancient Christian tradition of having a Porter, or someone at the door to the Church or Monastery to assist the weary traveler and make them welcome. Our porters help those who worship with us in the same way.
Many of those attending the SonRise service are also active in other churches, but welcome this opportunity to worship as a family.
